Since some years ago our Cuba GSA Captain and some eco-volunteers are carrying out Water monitoring in natural reservoir around sport venues and schools. It seems to be very moving for many people get attracted to this way of protecting environment. However not all the sport fan lovers are really aware about the link between water and sports, most of they express that they are all the time in the classroom and when not they are racing on land, jumping or doing any activity out of rivers, dams, ponds or sea shores.
And sure they are right if they only think that an athlete is just a subject that practices sports and do not co-live in a house, in a community or in a school. It is just enough to say that the water they drink, they wash with or bathe with comes from rivers, wells or from a simple pouring rain.
What this kind of people mostly ignores, perhaps, is that all this water belongs to a natural cycle and all the water communicates each other, so if you affect a water body in a place your health will be affected as a consequence.
This and other backgrounds helped to move athletes-students from the Sport University of Pinar del Río, Cuba to go to the nearby river and monitor the water and share about the experiences. It was a great moment to see everybody motivated to see how his closer water source was indeed.
Fortunately this monitoring was Ok. pH was steady 7, turbidity 40 JTU, Water temperature 29 and air temperature 33C. The most worrying parameter was Oxygen, 0ppm, not suitable for many species but at least saveable with a strong environmental management and education. It will be surely something to work on in future sessions.
